How the estimate works
A quick tour of what happens when you hit "Show me my car's value." No black box β you should know how any tool that spits out a number about your finances arrives at it.
1. VIN decode via NHTSA
We call the U.S. Department of Transportation's free VIN decoder to pull your car's year, make, model, body class, and engine info. Nothing is stored.
2. Depreciation curve
We apply a standard depreciation curve to your car's original MSRP: 20 % in year 1, ~13 % each of years 2-5, slower after that. Luxury brands get a make-based multiplier.
3. Mileage adjustment
The 12,000 mi/yr benchmark is the market's expectation. Above it, we subtract ~10 Β’ per over-mile; below it, we add. That's how trade-in guides do it.
4. Condition + range
Excellent adds 10 %, fair subtracts 15 %, poor subtracts 30 %. We return a Β± 10 % range around the midpoint to reflect real market spread.
Honest limitations
Ballpark tools like this are within about 10-15 % of a formal appraisal for most vehicles. Certain cases are trickier: rare trims, salvage titles, unusual mileage patterns, aftermarket modifications, and collector vehicles.
